Doug Hein, Founder & President

Doug Hein

Doug Hein is an executive with extensive experience in financial and operational management. He has incorporated and organized more than 100 companies, participated in financings and capital investments in excess of $1 billion and driven multiple acquisitions and divestitures. Doug is the Founder and President of the Heritage family of companies.

As Chief Financial Officer of a private equity firm and its portfolio companies, Doug had responsibility for the overall fiscal management of each company. He directed and managed the execution of the accounting, financial, tax, banking, risk management, audit, investor relations, human resources, insurance, legal and administrative functions of these entities. Prior to joining the private equity firm, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Access Data and Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Federated Administrative Services, the then largest subsidiary of Federated Services providing accounting and administrative services to Federated Investors and its customers. Doug began his career by working with KPMG for thirteen years. At KPMG he provided audit and consulting services to clients in the financial services and manufacturing industries. His clients included Allegheny Ludlum Steel, Emerson Electric, Federated Investors, HJ Heinz and Mellon Bank.

Doug is a summa cum laude graduate from Clarion University of Pennsylvania where he earned a degree in Business Administration with concentrations in Accounting and Finance. He is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Pennsylvania.

Justin Bilsland, Principal

Justin Bilsland

Justin Bilsland is an accomplished, results driven financial and operations executive with more than 20 years of progressive experience in finance and operations management with start-ups, global companies, privately held and family owned businesses. He has demonstrated the ability to streamline business operations that drive growth, increase efficiency and profitability.

While working with Heritage clients including as an interim CFO, Justin has evaluated and assessed businesses for potential acquisition. He has assessed staff, made organizational recommendations to optimize teams, refinanced the client’s credit facilities, developed financial models to show profitability by product by channel and analyzed pricing policies to increase profitability. Justin has also implemented new procedures to reduce the number of vendors, lower inventory costs, improve vendor on-time performance and streamline month-end closing processes.

Prior to Heritage, Justin was CFO of a start-up BioSAFE Engineering. In partnership with the CEO, managed a team of 20 employees to achieve rapid revenue growth. Over seven years, the company grew from a $200,000 service business to a $20 million designer, manufacturer, and servicer of bio hazardous waste processing equipment. Justin also worked as Treasurer at Voyager Group, LP, a family owned private equity holding company investing and operating businesses in real estate, aviation, and technology.

Justin started his career at PPG Industries, Inc. where he progressed through jobs where he was responsible for month-end closing, budgeting, and financial consolidation of four international plants generating combined annual revenue of $1.5 billion.

Justin is a graduate of Butler University with a B.S. in Biology and holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Entrepreneurship from Indiana University.

Jeff Koeppel, Advisor

Jeff Koeppel

Jeff Koeppel serves as Of Counsel to Kirk Halpin & Associates, P.A., with a concentration in corporate and securities law, mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance and corporate financings. Prior to joining the Firm, Jeff was a partner with the corporate/banking/securities boutique law firm of Elias, Matz, Tiernan & Herrick LLP in Washington, D.C. Prior to EMTH, he spent three years as a Senior Branch Attorney – Adviser in the Division of Corporate Finance at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Jeff’s clients range from startups to public companies in industries ranging from high tech, banking, retail, software, gaming, entertainment, new media, manufacturing, consumer products, distribution, and others.

Jeff is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Baltimore School of Law and has a Masters of Finance degree from The Joseph Sellinger School of Business, Loyola University Maryland. The Martindale-Hubbell Rating System lists Jeff as an AV-rated attorney, the highest possible level of achievement.

He has extensive first-chair transactional experience with expertise in extraordinary corporate transactions, including structuring, negotiating, diligencing, drafting and closing private and public capital raises, mergers and acquisitions, as well as advising boards of directors and senior management, preparing regulatory applications and periodic reports, interfacing with federal and state regulators, negotiating and preparing commercial agreements, and advising on disclosure and related matters.

Nick Rossi, Director of
Business Development

Nick Rossi

Nick Rossi is a business development executive with 10 years of experience in a wide range of industries, company sizes and life cycles. An established sales leader with a sharp customer-centric focus, Nick was part of the founding team that launched two successful start-ups, including RoadRunner Recycling (current valuation over $200M) where he served as Vice President of Sales from inception. Nick has exceeded every sales and business development goal in his career, leading by demonstration in direct sales efforts and with a passion for managing and/or coaching team members. He is integral to a sales organization in his ability to strengthen customer relationships and develop internal talent.

As a business development executive Nick has worked closely with marketing teams and initiatives including social media efforts. He has successfully worked in concert with companies’ ecommerce programs ensuring that the sales team efforts and ecommerce programs are complimentary and not in competition.

Nick assists Heritage in its own business development activities. In addition, Nick provides business advisory services to Heritage clients. He assists companies with their business development functions across his wide experience set in marketing and sales including the effective use of social media and web-based techniques and strategies.

Nick graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with a BS in Psychology.

Michael Ruggeri, Principal

Michael Ruggeri

Michael Ruggeri brings a wealth of experience resulting from a successful forty year career with PPG Industries, Inc. which included responsibilities in accounting, finance, and business development. This included assignments in the US and Europe, at the business unit and corporate staff levels, and at field and the headquarters location.

As Chief Financial & Administrative Officer for the Transitions Optical business (a majority owned PPG joint venture) from 2005 to 2009, he had functional responsibility for the finance, accounting, purchasing, IT, and legal functions. As a key member of the leadership team, the business delivered sales and earnings growth at double digit rates during this period. Michael also led negotiation of technology licensing agreements that secured rights to enabling intellectual property which facilitated development and commercialization of dynamic polarization lens coating products. As Business Controller for PPG’s Optical and Specialty Materials external reporting segment from 2009 to 2015, he was a key member of the leadership team that consistently delivered the highest return on sales (ROS) of any business within the PPG portfolio. Michael was a member of the deal team which negotiated the successful divestiture of the Transitions Optical business in a transaction valued at $3.4 billion in 2014.

Following completion of his PPG career, Michael has remained professionally active as a member on the Finance Council of St. Mary’s Parish and on the Board of Directors of Assumption Cemetery. In addition, Michael has been active as and a member of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Kereitsu Forum, the world’s largest organization of angel investors with more than 1,500 members.

Michael is a graduate of Lehigh University with a B.S. degree in Business & Economics and holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Duquesne University.

Denny Wist, Principal

Denny Wist

Denny Wist is presently CEO of a medical device start up, ThreadRite IV. Most recently he was President and Owner of a small ($1 million revenue) electronic component manufacturing company. While he managed it, the revenue doubled and then became profitable with a plus 60% gross margin. Prior to the electronic component company, he was President and COO of a $125 million niche steel manufacturing company in Ohio. The company went from losing money to being profitable by reducing the breakeven point by 58%, this was accomplished through implementation of lean management principles, effective strategy development and deployment and developing new business. In addition, he held various C level positions at Tata Steel, Corus Steel and AK Steel including Operations, Sales, Product Management, Marketing, Logistics, Strategy Development, Product Development and International Sales. Over his career, he has led turnarounds for three separate businesses, ranging in size from small to medium sized entities in different market segments.

Denny serves as a business mentor at University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute helping guide aspiring entrepreneurs in developing their business ideas into a commercially viable business.

Denny graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Metallurgy and from the University of Pittsburgh with a Masters degree in Business Administration.
